International honor for NJSP lab

New Jersey’s State Police have been honored again: Their crime lab is the first in the state to be accredited internationally by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board.

The New Jersey State Police Office of Forensic Sciences, based in Hamilton, is accredited in DNA, controlled substances, toxicology, serology, tool marks and trace evidence, authorities said.

Trace evidence includes paint, fibers, textiles, gunshot residue, glass, explosives, fire debris, footwear, and tires.

Although TV makes it appear commonplace, the State Police lab is one of the few sites in the entire country that can analyze difficult samples from bones, teeth, hair shafts, decomposed bodies, and charred remains – even if skin tissue and body fluids (the traditional DNA sources) are missing.
