The totals are in: Hudson County authorities last month arrested 80 people during its annual roundup of welfare cheats.
Several of those arrested receive welfare benefits but owe child support, or became ineligible for benefits because of arrest warrants, authorities said.
The Hudson County Sheriff’s Office got the defendants to come to them by cutting off their benefits. When they showed up at the welfare office to correct the problem, they were arrested.
Thirty-nine of the 80 were arrested for failing to pay a total of more than $343,000 in child support.
The top deadbeat dad in the bunch reportedly is Antonio Fields of Bayonne, who owes $41,359 in child support, records show. Two Jersey City men owe $31,692 and $27,360, respectively.
